the SPOT? Why is the “dead cold start” on a SPOT a little longer than the best of the newest GPS navigators? A “dead cold start” occurs when the unit hasn’t obtained new almanac data from the GPS satellites for more than 30 days or the unit has been moved more than about 600 miles since the last time it obtained a fix. The “dead cold start” on SPOT is a bit longer than the best of the newest GPS navigators because 1) the unit needed to be designed as small, light, inexpensive and power efficient as possible so by choice raw acquisition time was traded for the smallness, price and improved battery life. 2) there is an internal delay of a total of 30 seconds after an actual GPS fix is obtained before transmission for power management reasons (So when you see it transmit, it actually had GPS fix 30 seconds prior) 3) The satellite transmitter within the unit is a major power sucker when the messages are being transmitted to the satellite. This resulted in the other parts of the unit having to be extraordinarily power efficient to compensate. The GPS subsystem in the SPOT uses a tiny fraction of the power that the equivalent subsystem in a hand held GPS navigator uses, for example. Could you describe how often or when messages are sent? Message type: Does the unit always have a GPS fix? No, if you aren’t in a message-sending mode the GPS subsystem isn’t even powered on, there isn’t much sense in wasting battery power by running the GPS receiver if you’re not trying to send a location.
